Poor girl...

Question: How can this happen to us???

Answer:
The erosion of moral principles, the never ending quest for material wealth and lack of religious tolerance all contribute to the degradation of society. Malaysia, not unlike any western and developed countries, unfortunately succumbs to the ultimate price of progress, i.e. the creation of an anomic society (anomie - the sense of dispossession).

According to a French sociologist Emile Durkheim,

 "Anomie is present where the traditional sources of societal regulation — religion, government, and occupational groups — have all failed to exercise moral constraints on an increasingly unregulated capitalist economy. Religion, which once consoled the poor and at least partially restricted the material ambitions of the rich, has simply lost most of its power. Government, which once restrained and subordinated economic functions, is now their servant..."

Let me explain in simpler terms;

People are more and more drawn into the notorious rat-race's vicious cycle. In order to earn a living, you have to work more. The more you earn, the more you spend and the more you spend the less money you have to save. This in turn creates a problem whereby society is so focus on material wealth to their work and unavoidably neglects what is more important to them, ie. family, life, religion, values, morals, etc.

We have foregone our morals and principles which were religiously upheld by our forefathers, only to satisfy our never-ending lust for money and power. This moral degradation ultimately leads to socio problems like what we have witnessed in the poor little girl's homicide case.

For whatever motive behind the brutal and gruesome murder, it can be said that the culprits who did it have lost their moral compas and have completely disregard the teachings of religion (ANY religion for that matter) which preaches harmony, tolerance and peace.

A point to ponder then, is what will it take to turn things around? Perhaps a good place to start is to look into ourselves and ask why are we here. Take time to reflect onto ourselves and re-prioritise our life. Start with being tolerant each other, be more patient, listen to others. Then perhaps we might see some light at the end of the tunnel.

RIP, Palie

Palie was a good friend of mine, and to many of us in PhotoMalaysia. The loss of a friend, co-worker, photo assistant, lil brother, teh-tarik member, etc is deeply felt by us all. It's such a tragic death, I can't imagine what the family is going through right now as he's the eldest of four siblings.

Many of us who knew him well came to the funeral in Bkt Antarabangsa. Here are some shots of the funeral event:

Lancaster University Alumni Dinner

The dinner was held at Renaissance Hotel KL with the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the Uni both attending. It was great to see familiar faces again after some time leaving Lancaster. We were treated with a slideshow presentation on the progress of the Uni and I must say, I feel very proud to be a Lancasterian.

:D
